OT: Logging-In Issues at Altec User Board

The Lansing Heritage forums are next to useless for Altec owners/appreciators.

The dictionary definition of "Ignored" should read: Altec user posting at Lansing Heritage.

A decent discussion can be had here.You get the feeling that over there liking Altec is like farting in an elevator.

There is no site that give one what this site does.Thanks Todd.

It is very disappointing to see so many Folks looking for help over there and are completely ignored due to the fact of one thing. They have Altec in their question and is one of the reasons I would like to see a Library on Todd's site.It just makes sense to me to have a Altec Library on a Altec site. I won't have to go over there again.Let's face it they are only interested in Just Big & Louds I mean JBL on LH. As a matter of fact Don McRitchie has just done the same thing with his forum a few months back.I'm not sure if he changed hosts or was just an upgrade.

I personally think that enough of us here have enough data sheets and literature to build a bigger better Library than they have.It is a waste for it not to be shared.The more people that have access to this info the more people that will be able to copy it and pass along to others.We are ensuring that Altec will continue to be of Interest if people have access to it.

I can capture the entire hostboard to my hard drive, but it's huge. With the old address system, I could have captured only the Altec section.
It's all just threads in one section. Should make it much easier. (we may loose the classified section).

I want to Thank You Pano for volunteering to help Todd with the technical side of things.If he needs it.You don't see too many people willing to do that these days Kudos to you my friend.Even though it has been said it could be a gargantuan task you stepped up to the plate, cool. :2thumbsup:

Pano Do you have an idea of the size Hard Drive you would need in Gigs ? I'm looking into Home Servers at the moment.Just curious what's needed as Todd will need a new one(HDD) I suppose, on top of the software,Hosting fees.Unless he has some spares lying around.

You need the drive to do the capture, then everything gets uploaded to the server. It's server space that's required, not a drive. Except for backup, which could be done to dual layer DVD's.

Todd won't need a drive at all if Pano does the move, once the move is done and backup made, probably he and Todd should both have a copy of the backup...

Most of the posts are text. it's not gonna be as much space as you would think.

OG the home server is for me.To back up all my video,music files,doc's, as I have quickly gone through a couple 1TB drives already and would have just picked up a small External to do the back-up on for Todd,if needed.I should have explained a bit better.But this is Pano's department.He has way more experiance with forums than I.

I just bought this PopcornHour C-200 for streaming files to my TV,what a awesome machine this is.It will play just about any codec you can throw at it.I was looking at Home Servers to back-up all my media files,pdf's,doc's,on the 1 TB drives,my laptop's etc...

I'm just here to help supply some Jokes, Support and a few Dinero's for Todd or any other way I can help out the website.

Well I think that Todd has it under control, but there is always help if he needs it.

I did manage to capture a lot of the forum, it's bigger than I thought. All the way back to Dec 2002. Maybe a gig or more.
Hard to tell because I don't have it all and there is a lot of junk that got captured as well. Like many links to bad porn and lady wrestling on the Hostboard.

One thing someone outside the backroom can NOT capture is the user profiles and log-ins. That's admin only. And you sure want those! Don't want to lose our profiles and log-ins. So it really needs to be done by the forum administrator to get a good backup.

Of course, a back-up is always a good idea. The phpBB software allows the admin to make an archive on his local machine. That's for safe keeping and also to move everything to a new server. I image that is what Todd, or whomever he has doing the work, will do.
Not having done a phpBB backup, I don't know what options are available. But basically we just want all the threads (html), the attachments and the user profiles.

Move all that to a new host and check that it works as it should. Oh, and make it green!

Sargent Shultz here. How is all this going to work with search engines? They currently don't work for the most part with Hostboard's new regime.

Interesting looking toy.

I just got it a couple weeks ago.You have to install the BD player, HDD rack, WiFi card yourself, which are options and have to be bought separately.But it only took me an hour to do that.I'm going to use it for my centerpiece in my Home Theater.Right out of the box though plays any file I threw at it.Apple,Windows,H.264,MKV,etc... I love it.

I also installed a 500GB 2.5" (Mobile) laptop Hard Drive, "Seagate Momentous XT" Hybrid Solid state HD, you can use a 3.5" too but if you get the slim Blue-Ray player then you have to use the 2.5" Hard Drive.The Hard Drive is required to run apps on it.Like installing the Youtube app,there are all kinds of apps too.The way this is built is so that this can be upgraded constantly.So it won't be outdated in a couple years.

There is a lot of setup involved but once setup is done, it's worth every penny IMHO.They even have it's own forum for issues,suggestions for future firmware updates, you go onto the forum and tell them what you would like to see in a firmware update and if it's something most Folks are looking for they will add it.:2thumbsup:

The forum is "Networked Media Tank.Com" I'm completely thrilled so far with it,granted I haven't had it long yet, as long as it holds up electronically.In the first generation, power supplies had High failure rates.Mine is second generation now, problem solved. These are new items, and you won't find them in your local "Best Buy"

1 Gig ? That's it ? The easiest cheapest way to go would be to use a thumb drive to do the capture with. Staples by me, just had a sale on them.I bought these Sandisk Cruzer 8 GB thumb drives for $2.50 a piece You can't get that kind of storage any cheaper IMHO unless you buy some garbage HD then maybe.But that's $.31 cents a Gig.I have a dozen.

A long with the green background, is the all important Library,links to archives,Classifieds,etc..

Good question, good point. Most hosting providers are good about helping with search engines. There are some tricks to the trade. diyAudio.com is very well crawled by Google, so it's possible.

On my old website I had over a million views, so must have been doing something right.

It's just a matter of the Bot spiders getting in.Once they get onto a site they start archiving at a tremendous rate.
